Seasons In The Wilderness

Weekly Devotional

“O God, You are my God: Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water”. ~ Psalm 63:1

These are King David’s words when he was in the wilderness of Judah, closely pursued by his enemies – possibly at the time he fled from Absalom. Imagine how he must have felt in the natural… In the middle of the wilderness, hard-pressed because of his enemies and in flight for his life, and still his soul’s priority was to pour out praises from his lips (vs 2) unto God starting early in the day. The psalm goes on to give us clues that his prayer went up before any light from the sun ,while he still lay resting.

Thirst is a voracious need that will not cease to cry out for one of life’s most essential elements. Though it demands to be heard, David did not allow his thirst, exhaustion, or extreme discomfort from the wilderness to negate his overwhelming desire of his flesh and soul to simultaneously cry out to his God. The Bible tells us that our flesh and spirit are always at war with one another. Granted, because David knew his God and kept Him close within His heart, his flesh never took precedence over his spirit.

Have you ever felt, or presently feel, like you are in a vast wilderness in your walk with the Lord? One in which it seems like every direction you turn is nothing but a dry and barren wasteland? Take heart, as every one of us has experienced a season such as this at some time or another. Yet, every season must come to an end and this too shall pass.

Let David’s example of spiritual endurance in spite of some of the worst mental and physical circumstances be your inspiration and give you hope. No matter the situation, your God is more than willing and able to carry you through it as you remain faithful to place Him first in your life. Your wilderness will turn into a land of “milk and honey” as you praise Him with joyful lips.
